Mary Lou Williams

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
One of the greatest woman in piano jazz must have been Mary Lou Williams. She was born in 1910 in Atlanta, Georgia as Mary Elfrieda Scruggs, but as she married with John Williams at the age of 16 year, we better know her as Mary Lou Williams. As a kid she appeared in talent shows and became a vaudeville artist at the age of thirteen. Her first recordings were made with the Synco Jazzers, and she became the leader of that band. She composed and arranged and played the piano all through the 1930s and she is to be found as arranger in a lot of 1930s and 1940s big bands like the Benny Goodman's and Duke Ellington's Orchestras. In the early 1950s she moved to Europe and played with Dizzy Gillespie, after some years without music, in 1957.
In the 1960s and 1970s she toured several times through Europe, and I found a DVD titled of one of those concerts: Norman Granz Jazz in Montreux - 1978: Mary Lou Williams. This solo concert was registered on this DVD. The years before her death, she passed away May 1981, she often demonstrated the history of jazz. This solo recital at the Montreux Jazz Festival, recorded the 16th of July 1978, could be seen as such a retrospective of her carreer. It is one of the last recordings ( there are but few surviving younger recordings.) There are medleys with ragtimes, spirituals ( The Lord Is Heavy), blues, boogies and swing. I liked her version of the standards Tea For Two and Honeysuckle Rose and her own composition Little Joe from Chicago. I like this DVD as it is, for me, one of the few recordings I have from this great piano player.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
