Oliver Nelson

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Like Gene Ammons, a few blogs before, Oliver Nelson, alto and tenor saxophone, composer and arranger, seems to be one of those jazz musicians that slipped through my net. Up to now. Last night I played myself the New Jazz recording Screamin' The Blues as played by the Oliver Nelson Sextet. This album was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder May 1960.
Born in St. Louis ( June 1932) Oliver Nelson started his career in the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra and George Hudson Big Band, two St. Louis based orchestras. He toured around with Louis Jordan's band too and after he finished his military services at the navy he started a career in music in New York. This record was made during that period. It was one of the six albums he recorded - three of it with Eric Dolphy also present on Screamin' The Blues. When you listen to the first track of Screaming The Blues, with the same title as the album, you might think that Oliver Nelson might be a player that lays on the floor with his tenor aimed high, honking and screaming as loud as he could. No, that's wrong - although the first track suggest that by the screaming of his instrument, he is more a traditionalist, not a showman.
In the early 1960s Oliver Nelson became a composer and arranger and that might be the reason that he isn't as known as he should be. He became a teacher in music too. His compositions and arrangements for known artists and productions are very important; he worked for people like Duke Ellington and Ringo Starr to name two extremes; for Marlon Brando's film Last Tango In Paris ( he arranged Gato Barbieri's music ), Diana Ross's film Lady Sings The Blues (the arrangements are his) and the arrangements for Alfie, Sonny Rollin's film.
His most known composition, not on the Screaming The Blues album is Stolen Moments. I found a fragment of this tune I love to share.

A second fragment is part of a 1966 program made for the Dutch NCRV television, with Oliver Nelson in front of his band, with musicians like Art Farmer, Ake Persson and Lee Konitz and the Dutch piano player Pim Jacobs with his trio. The tune is titled Just Friends.

Oliver Nelson died in Los Angeles October 1975

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Het nummer heet Just Friends.
