Private tapes

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

The discovery of the year: shrieking headlines report the find of an eighteenth century manuscript of a composition made by a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The composition, titled All Blues Allegro die Wolfgango Mozart was found in an old book and presented yesterday in Salzburg, Austria to the world.

It's a pity that this find, and the execution of Saddam last night will rule the headlines for the news next days, so another important find won't have enough news value to reach the editors of the news papers.

What happened? A few days ago some important, up to that time, unknown private recordings were found in a bunch of tapes.
Extensive research confirms that the 35 years old tape contains private recordings, that might gain an insight into the development of the popular music in Northern Europe.

The private recordings on the tape were hidden between recordings of Lonnie Johnson and Leon Redbone , which explains, how these recordings could be overlooked for so long time.

The spokesman of the El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project, who don't wants to inform us about the source of the tape, declared that the private tape contains about 23 minutes of guitar duets in a rather decent sound quality, given the age of the recordings, made by the, now rather forgotten, pioneer of Danish guitar playing, J. Ergen.

This forgotten chapter in North European musical development hasn't been documented or recorded at all, so these tapes might be very valuable. the National Music Archive in Copenhagen confirms.

It contains about 10 short pieces, most spontaneous, not arranged, guitar duets of J. Ergen with S. Clement, made during a cozy gathering at a students apartement around the fall of 1972.
At a rough estimate both Ergen as Clement must have been students, and about 20 years old.

Remarkable are two solo pieces by Ergen himself, titled Slow Blues in C and Jorgen´s Far Out Rag, which seems to be a composition of the guitar player himself.
A blues harp recording in Testing The Blues Harp, might even be an example of the first recorded Blues Harp in Northern Europe in general and Denmark in particular.
Thanks to the archives of the previous mentioned El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project a rare photo of J. Ergen can be showed. It is part of an unknown gathering some years ago with another guitar player.

The spokesman of the project does not rule out that new private tapes will be discovered later. Well informed circles suggest that J. Ergen played with T van B.in the 1970s too, although it is unknown if these gatherings were documented.

It seems out of the question that these 23 minutes of extreme rare recordings will be available on CD before the end of the year, the spokesman declared.

J. Ergen lives now somewhere isolated in the southeast part of Denmark with his family and was not to reach for commends.

I'm proud that I can introduce you to a short fragment of the private tapes; a piece called Candyman, in which J. Ergen plays in a duet with S. Clement. If you listen carefully you can hear some influences of the music of Leon Redbone. Enjoy it - a great moment to end the year !!

Dear Editor of the blog,

As a member of the Danish clan of Vikings in South-East I'm astonished to read your story about some private recordings of guitar duets from the 1970'ies by two troubadours from this country. I knew both of them in my youth, they were just fooling around with their instruments, never took the business serious - therefore they only reached three public performances ending up in chaos at one place, as the public started a fight between two rival gangs of bootlegers. The godfather of one of these gangs, the mighty NPJ (-renown among Danish mopsters as 'Fatsy'), had earlier demanded that the two Viking 'bardes' started a duo to perform some of their repertoire in public - not to please the audience, but to prevent any pretending member of the audience to start in the business of music. It is reported that 'Fatsy' had the duo recorded in the fall of 1972 in s private studio with the aim of making a demo-tape to demonstrate these amateurs' awfull lack of skills with their instruments, not to tell the lack of rhytmic sense. - To put it short in this place, the private recordings refered to in your entertaining article may be extracts from this demo-tape made in 1972 - the original tape may be lost, as the archieve of the mentioned 'Fatsy' burned out in 1983, just before he left Denmark and found an exile somewhere in South America, where he was reported found dead in 1989 after a riot somewhere near the Amazonas.
I am happy to be able to contribute with this additional info according the subject. I forgot to introduce myself, my name is
